Forman, B. M. Pearson, Joicph M. Hernandez. The above, from seven of the fifteen slave States, number ninety delegates.

Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Delawire, Maryland, and Texas a majority of all the Southern States have not appointed delegates, and will not be represented in the convention. Of the above States, it will be seen that North Carolina, Virginia, and South Ca olina vvili be but partially repre-ented. Jn Vi ginia, a movement was made, ashorttime since, to postpone the meeting 01 the convention to a later date, as there was considerable feeling gamst me propriety 01 tne meetintr at the South, unless every State couid be represented. In lennessee, a large body the people are opposed to it, and a meeting held in Nashville a short time since, passed resolutions declaring the movement a violation 01 the constitution oi the United States, and could be productive only of evil erlects. In all of the extreme Southern States, except Louisiana and Texas, all parties are favorable to the convention, and consider it the only means by which the rights of thc- South can be properly and effectually vindicated.

We understand that Gov. Wright, on yester-y, commuted the punishment of death to that of imprisonment for life in the. State Prison, in the case of Charles Gates, a youth about twenty-one years of age, who was sentenced to be hung on Friday, the Sth of June, and that a respite has been grunted in the case of William Gross, who wa3 sentenced to be executed at the same time, at the instance cf the Supreme Court. The 19th day of July is fixed as the time for his execution, unless the Supreme Court in the meantime should reverse the decision of the Circuit Court both cases are in the county of Clark. Ind.

State Journal, 1st. Rail Road Excui sio.v. We had the pleasure on yesterday of a trip some ten miles, on the New Albany and Salem Railroad. The two splendid passengers cars were crowded with ladies and gentlemen, who appeared delighted with this short raiirce.d excursion. The track already laid is remarkably smooth for a flat bar, as much so as any road of ihe kind we ever travelled on.

We learn that, the rail will be used by the company, after 45 miles, which distance will be completed for the fall trade. Nets Albany Ledger, Saturday. Deaths by Cholera on Shipboard. Washington, May 30. In the Weeling Bridge case, the Supreme Court decided to-day, the question of jiiiisdiction in tavor of Pennsylvania, and appointed Chancellor Walworth of New York, Master Commissioner to take testimony and report at the next term. It is understood that the questions referred to, are to the fsct of the obstruction, and whether the bridge can be raised. The Counsel for tho bridee relied on the Ques tion of jurisdiction, to save their case. That, de cided lor Pennsylvania, would seem to be conclusive as to the Wheeling bridge.

The Growing Tobacco Crop. The following letter comes to us from the heart of the richest tobacco growing section in Southern Kentucky, and from a source which we are sure is woll in formed. Nash. True 11 ii Garrittsburg, May 24, '50. Messrs.

Editors: For the information of those interested in the Tobacco trade, I beg leave, through the medium of your paper, to give some information iu regard to the prospects of the next crop, which, it seems to me, must exert a powerful influence on prices, and I give this information with the more confidence, as it i3 derived from my own actual observation. I have recently been through a large portion of tile "Green River" country and that portion of Tennessee bordering on Kentucky, and 1 assert confidently that more than half a crop cannot be made under the most favorabie circumstances. It is now the of May, and the Planters have not even commenced planting their crops; at the same date last year many of them had finished. The late and cold spring kept back the plants until mot of them were eaten jp hy the fly, and in consequence nobody has a sufficiency. To make a full crop, it is absolutely necessary that a portion of it should be planted very early, in order that it may mature aud be oat of the way before the late plantings "come in." Of course that will be impossible this year, and all the tobacco that is planted must "come in" about the same time, and il even a full crop were planted under such circumstances it would be impossible to save it.

Taking this view of the subject, (and it is a correct one,) I would advise' those who have not sold their crops to iio'd them. Tobacco must rise. Respectfully, A. L. J.

Doings in Mhiilenedkg. It appears that some of the people of Muhlenburg county have lately been engaged in "lynching" and "regula-lating" a party ol depredators. A man named Commodore Curtis was whipped and compelled toleave the comity; another named Samuel Levi was tried before an examining court for burning the hcuse of Mr. Benj. Shaver, but the evidence being adjudged insufficient to convict, he was acquired.

A public meeting was thereupon held, over which a minister of tht gospel presided, another preacher acting as secretary, and it was decided by a vote of about fifty to ten or twelve that he should leave the county. Whether he left or not is not stated. From all wo can learn, the people of the lower end of that county have been greatly annoyed by a gang of villains. Hopkinsville Whig. ALM1T Oil.

Ephraim Brovn, a young man, about six feet in heighth, dark complewoned, with brownhair, and a scar under his light temple, daih hazle pop-eyes, with a narrow forehead, was arrested by the police for passing counterfeit money and swindling.

'When arrested he wore a blue cloth can, but in his possession was found a glazed cover, that fitted over his cloth cap very nicely He has small black whiskers, and did wear a goatee. He has been financiering round town for two weeks or more, and passing counterfeit five dollar bills of the State Bank of Indiana at the City Exchange for julips and bowling, at Marble Hall for suppers, at btephens's for con-rectionaries, at Vogle's for tonsorial operations, at a German's for a neat pair of boots, At the suggestion of the gentleman's attorney, the case was continued to Monday, and he was, in the meantime, sent to jail. O'd Kelly was up on a peace warrant by Ellen Hanathan. He is an habitual drunkard, and quarrelled with his neighbors. The Court let the old fellow off this time.

Johnson was arraigned for drunkenness and abusing his family. He was held to bail to be of good behavior in the sum of S200 for three months. Mrs. R. Tumbridge was arraigned on a peace warrant by A.

J. Vanderslics, doctor. He said he was very soiry she was drunk all the time for twen ty-fou hours. She gave her husband a first rate licking, and promised to take the hair off of (h's) the Doctor's head, and perhaps set the house afire; in addition to which she set him crazy about 3 o'clock in the morning by her tongue and the liquor, and throwing chairs and the furniture about, and from her counduct he Ind no peace, and could not be insured. Jake a young man of the Doctor's, sub.

stantiated some of the statements of his, and added that Mrs. Tumbridge throttled him on one occasion and. lie struck her Mrs. Tumbiidge stated that the Doctor and his family persecuted her and insulted her, and his statements were all falsehoods. She said that she could prove her character, and that she is a good Christian, but the Doctor denied his Savior, and in any other country but this he would not be recognised.

She further stated that the Doctor was a very bad man, and immoral, and threw slinking fish at her door. The Court here stayed the eloquence of the lady, and demanded her witnesses to substantiate her statements. No proof was adduced, and the lady was re quired to enter into recognizance to keep the peace for three months in the sum of S100 bail. Some thirty persons, who were uninjured by the alarm, jumped inlo the river, of whom it is ascertained nine were drowned; the remainder saved themselves by swimming to the shore and to the boat. Upon the decks seven wero killed, and forty-eight scalded.

Among those killed upon deck was a slave of Capt. McCord, clerk of the boat; Mr. J. Hummer, a oabin passenger, from Louisiana, and his slave; a negro woman, slave of Mrs. IvIeClure.

Among those drowned was Mrs. Elizabeth BIcLaughlin, a deck passenger. It was supposed that Mr. Plumrner's body was robbed or SI ,200. All the other persons lost and scaldeJ were emigrant deck passengers.

Mr. Moore, the mate, who was sitting in front of the boilers, at the I bow of the boat, saved himself by catching up the bight of a rope, and throwing himself over the bow into the water. He heard an unusi sound of rushing steam, and instantly jumped overboard. While ia that situation he rescued a little boy. Various causes are assigned for the explosion.

one of which is, that "the water in the boilers escaped through the mud valve, unknown to the engineer;" and another is, that the flues were too large. The boilers are 44 inche3 in diame ter asa si teet long. The flues are inches in diameter. Affray. Yesterday afternoon, a man by the name of John Downey struck a countryman of his by the name of Tom Cummins, knocking him down and so severely injuring him that his life is despaired of.

Downey, who was drunk, had been committing some depredations at the Louisville Hotel, and the porter of the establish ment pursued and overtook him at the Pear' street bridge, and knocked him down two or three times. Finally, Cummins interposed, as the friend of Downey, to induce him to go away, when he struck him a terrible blow which felled him to the earth, the back of his head striking the stone flagging with great force He lay there perfectly insensible, and it was thought he was dead. He was taken up and conveyed to a tavern, and several physicians called in, but he remained speechless to a late hour last night. The skull is not fractured, but it is supposed that his brains are injured. Downey was arrested and lodged in jail.

He was perfectly crazy, and made the most desper ate resistance to all those who attempted to take i him. Accident. The 3teamer James Millingar, from Pittsburgh, broke one of her wheels, and lost an anchor by drifting against the steamer Bunker Hill, yesterday. She had a barge in tow, and had succeeded in getting through the canal, after 24 hours' detention, and before she could be securely fastened, having very little steam on, she ran foul of the other boat. Stuawbebries were very abundant in market Saturday at 50 per gallon.

Some of them were as lerge and fine as any we ever saw. OThe Gen. Worth arrived from Green river yesterday. H-yThe Washington Republic of Monday last contains a powerful and convincing article defending the President against Mr.

Clay's attack. We will endeavor to find room for the article, or at least the larger part of it, in a day or two Mr. Clay's remarkable course is far from beins approved of by the Whig party in Kentucky. The last number of the Danville (Ky.) Tribune in speaking of the matter says: Mr. Clay is, in our humble judgment, greatly in error.

Gen. Taylor desires, as much as Mr. Clay, to see the unhappy differences between the North and the South amicably adjusted, but ho practices tiie principle of non-interference in the action of Congress, for which he deserves approval rather than censure. jel S. G.
