Arrange By MICHAEL JENNINGS 'Staff Writer man who had one death sen-' tence thrown out by the Kentucky Supreme Court could get the same sentence again this week unless a Jefferson Circuit Court jury decides his troubled childhood warrants a lesser punishment. Randy Haight, 41, was convicted Monday of two counts each of murder and first-degree robbery for robbing and killing two Danville residents in August 1985.

The jury of nine men and three women, which deliberated 2Vt hours before convicting him, also found Haight guilty of illegal possession of a handgun. Haight was sentenced to death in 1986 after pleading guilty to mur-. dering David Omer and Patricia Vance. The state Supreme Court threw out the sentence in 1988, rul-, ing that Haight had been misled into thinking Garrard Circuit Judge Robert Jackson would accept a plea agreement. The agreement that Jackson rejected called for a sentence of life without the possibility of parole for 25 years.

Haight's lawyers claim the state should be bound by the original plea bargain; however, the state high court disagreed in 1992, and the state is seeking the death penality, The case was moved to Jefferson County because of heavy publicity in the Danville area. Retired Circuit Judge Benjamin Shobe was named special judge for the trial, which started in mid-January. The state attorney general's office took over the prosecution of Haight in 1990 at the request of Garrard Commonwealth's Attorney Thomas Lockridge. In the trial's sentencing phase, "we're trying to save his life, because who he was, the person who committed these crimes, was caused by the way he was raised," Ernie Lewis, one of Haight's lawyers, said yesterday. The defense put Haight's mother and half-sister on the stand yesterday in an effort to show he was abused and neglected as a child.

Carol Good, a social work professor at Eastern Kentucky University, testified that the evidence of neglect in Haight's childhood home in Columbus, Ohio, "ranks right up there with the most extreme that I've seen." She said he also was sodomized by an adult when he was 16. Haight was found guilty of robbing and murdering Vance, a dental assistant, and Omer, a businessman, Aug. 22, 1985, four days after escaping from the Johnson County Jail. As Haight was being pursued in a Mercer County cornfield after the murders, Lexington police Officer Roy Mardis was accidentally, shot and killed by a state trooper. In addition to the death penalty, the jury's options include life without the possibility of parole for 25 years and a regular life sentence, which would make Haight eligible for parole in 12 years.

Haight already is serving sentences for several other crimes, two of them attempted murder and automobile theft committed while he was evading police after killing Vance and Omer. He also has been sentenced for wanton endanger-ment, burglary and theft. died here Monday. Memorial service, 11 a.m. Friday, Johnson Grove Baptist Church.

Thursday and after noon Friday. Two men charged with slashing the throat of elderly bar patron Associated Press 'Associated Press SOMERSET, Ky. Detonators found in an Ohio man's motel room allegedly were intended for a bomb to be set off after police answered a ake call at the motel, authorities said yesterday. i Somerset police charged Vincent Dickerson, 38, of Coshocton, Ohio, seven counts of criminal possession of a destructive device. Sev- British-made land-mine detona- tQrs were confiscated Monday from Dickerson's room at Somerset Court Motel.

Authorities said they don't know why Dickerson would target officers of the south-central Kentucky city. IDickerson's only run-in with that police force was an arrest in May for 'alcohol intoxication. He paid a fine and court costs. Lt. Gary Jones said an informant alleged that Dickerson intended to build a bomb and make a fake emergency call to the station.

He planned to detonate the bomb when the officers entered the room, Jones said. Dickerson also had a plan for any officers who survived the blast, Jones said. "He was allegedly going to be on a rooftop with a rifle and shoot the surviving officers," Jones said. Somerset police Chief Dave Gilbert said the informant is an 18-year-old "associate" of Dickerson but would not give any other details. Dickerson has been living at the motel for about a year.

He was arrested Sunday night after allegedly pointing a gun at someone. He was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment and carrying a concealed weapon. Dickerson had been charged with kidnapping and murder in the 1984 shooting death of Robert Wayne Keels, 35, of Haydenville, Ohio. The case ended in two hung juries. Dickerson was also sentenced to a year in prison in Muskingum County, Ohio, in 1985 on a concealed weapons charge, according to The Athens (Ohio) Messenger.

Dickerson is being held without bond in the Pulaski County Detention Center. He pleaded not guilty Monday in Pulaski District Court to the weapons charges and is scheduled for arraignment tomorrow on the explosives charges. Hart Funeral Home. Visitation after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Visitation after 7 p.m. Wednesday. FULTON James W. King, 66, Duffy's Tavern and plotted to rob him, Evansville police Capt. Joe Reed said.

Roy, who lived in Gentryville, about 25 miles east of Evansville, frequented bars in Evansville and Henderson, Reed said. Patrons at Duffy's told police that Roy had left with two men in their 20s, and the descriptions led police to question Hayes. According to an affidavit, Hayes said he and Sadler saw Roy wave the cash and Sadler told Hayes he wanted to rob Roy. The affidavit says the robbery took place en route to a restaurant. The three stopped, and Hayes saw Sadler slice Roy's neck twice with a box cutter, the affidavit says.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. A 74-year-old man died of a slashed throat after two men tried to rob him of money he had flashed in a bar, police said. The victim, Wilford Roy, apparently was trying to drive himself to a hospital Saturday night as blood streamed from his severed jugular vein when his car ran into another, causing a four-car accident. Yesterday police arrested William L. Hayes at his home in Evansville and Cecil Randal Sadler in Greenville, Ky.

Both were charged with murder and attempted robbery. Sadler, 29, and Hayes, 23, saw Roy wave a large sum of cash in Police check out suspects, leads in Taco Bell killings LOUISVILLE AREA FUNERALS a native of Dunnville. Funeral: 10 a.m. Wednesday, McKinney-Brown Funeral Home, Liberty. Frank J.

Kelley III, 70, Lake Klopp's sister. Price moved from Knoxville to Clarksville last fall partly because she wanted a better, safer life for her five children. "We just can't figure out what to tell the kids," said Christine Barkey, her sister. Price's husband, Michael Lee Price, said he went to the restaurant at closing time early Sunday to pick her up. He said he saw nothing unusual and returned home under a prior understanding that cleanup might take longer than expected and she would call when she was through.

The call never came. "I might have been down there while they were killing Pat and the others," he said quietly. Clarksville, home of the sprawling Fort Campbell army base on the Tennessee-Kentucky border, is accustomed to grieving the casualties of war and military service. But talk of the slayings saturated the town of 76,000. A dozen floral arrangements have been left in front of the restaurant, which is roped off with a yellow police ribbon marking a crime scene.

Associated Press CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. Investigators said yesterday that they have suspects, witnesses and leads in the slayings of four fast-food workers who were gunned down early Sunday during an apparent robbery at a Taco Bell restaurant. Police pressed their investigation as families of the four prepared for their funerals today. "We have several suspects, and they vary in age," said Jim Taylor, senior agent for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. There have been no arrests and the suspects are still being sought, he said.

"We're getting a lot of work done, but "we're not close to an arrest," said Capt. Doug Pectol of the Clarksville Police Department. "We're running down some good leads and hope they pan out." least 75 potential witnesses have been interviewed, he said.
