4 THE COURIER JOURNAL, Early Edition STAFF PHOTO BY MICHAEL HAYMAN The Rev. Louis Coleman, left, spoke in Louisville yesterday regarding violence after Thunder Over Louisville. Next to Coleman were the Rev. Bob Burks and Toni Stringer. Leaders decry violence after 'Thunder' but ask for focus on inequities By LESLIE SCANLON Staff Writer A dozen community leaders gathered yesterday in western Louisville to denounce the attacks on spectators that followed Thunder Over Louisville and to ask for an end to violence.

But the leaders also urged the community to pay much closer attention to the inequities that lead to frustration among young African Americans. "Our concern is the concern of most Louisvillians we want a safe community where people can go as they please, when they please," said the Rev. Louis Coleman. "Our approach here: is to show solidarity, that we are not condoning crime of any kind white on white, black on black, white on black, black on white." "It is embarrassing, particularly in the black community, to see young groups of black, AfricanAmerican men jump on their white, Caucasian brothers," said the Rev. Bob Burks, pastor of Spillman Memorial Church.

"We could have learned something from the Rodney King verdict, that justice has been served and when you violate someone's rights there should be some type of punishment." Many of the leaders who included ministers, an alderman, and people active in civil rights and community groups also urged people to pay attention to the unemployment and lack of opportunity feeding the anger of black youths. "We do need to look at the source of violence," said Toni Stringer, an assistant commonwealth's attorney. Statistics show that "everything that people want in life whites always have twice as much, like good housing and good jobs," said Anne Braden of the Kentucky Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression. "People of color always have twice as much of the bad things, like slums, like unemployment, like infant mortality, like prison cells. Look at the situation.

We don't have to feel guilty about it because we're white we have to do something about it." Some of the speakers questioned whether the media have inaccurately portrayed the incidents on April 17, in which young black people attacked dozens of whites, as racial incidents. One victim, who is biracial, told The Courier-Journal that one of her black attackers asked: "What are you trying to do, be white?" as she walked with her white friends. An African-American teen-ager who helped break up one of the fights characterized it as "racial stuff, white hatred." But Shelby Lanier, a retired Louisville police officer, said, "I don't see this as a racial problem, what happened that "I was on Fourth Street that night, and I saw a number of these acts personally," said 12th Ward Alderman Paul Bather, who is black. "There were no acts where people were going around saying things about white people. There was none of that.

There was chaos; it was wild. I'll tell you the truth, I was scared they were going to assault me." Walter Barnes, executive director of the Chestnut Street branch of the YMCA, said the media did not focus on reports that night of crimes not involving whites such as an incident in which an African-American man was assaulted by blacks. Leslie County man shot to death during argument at Bad Creek From Staff and Special Dispatches ASHER, Ky. A Leslie County man was shot to death Saturday during an argument at Bad Creek. William Caldwell, 42, of Roark died at the scene, state police in Hazard said.

Caldwell's brother Larry, of War Branch, then fired a pistol at Sizemore, hitting him in the neck, police said. Sizemore was released Sunday from the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington. Police said no arrests have been made; Detective Tim Hogg is continuing the investigation.

William Caldwell was a farmer. Survivors besides his brother include his wife, Cassie Caldwell; three sons, Kevin Caldwell of Tazewell, and Craig S. and William L. Caldwell I1, both of Roark; three daughters, April Angela and Louise D. Caldwell, all of Roark; his mother, Lucy C.

A Laurel County woman died a month after she was set afire by an assailant who doused her with kerosene. Carelene Faye Eldridge, 48, of East Bernstadt, was pronounced dead at 2:45 p.m. Saturday at the University of Kentucky Hospital.

She died of complications caused by burns over 40 percent of her body, according to the Fayette County coroner's office. Police said that an assailant poured kerosene on Eldridge and ignited it on March 24 at her house. She suffered severe burns to her face, upper body, arms and upper thighs. The Laurel County sheriff's department arrested Eldridge's boyfriend, Dennis Ray Harrison, 44, the next day, charging him with criminal attempt to commit murder. In light of Eldridge's death, prosecutors will present evidence to a grand jury next month, seeking to upgrade the charge against Harrison, Sheriff Floyd Brummett said.

Harrison is being held in the Laurel County Detention Center in lieu of a $200,000 bond. Three die as cars collide during illegal drag race LOVEVILLE, Md.
