(AP) Fumes from a floor-sealing project at Passaic County Community College wafted through the building yesterday, sickening at least 45 people who were hospitalized for nausea and dizziness.

Hospital officials said most of those treated were released. Two workmen using the chemical toluene to seal a cafeteria floor were the first victims, said college president Gustavo A. Mellander. As the fumes spread, others were sickened and the fire department ordered two buildings evacuated and classes canceled. Toluene is a colorless, flammable chemical that irritates the eyes, respiratory tract and skin.

Acute exposure can damage the central nervous system and result in coma. "Some people just flopped over on the street" said Carl Kraus, assistant director of county services. "I heard sirens and noise outside. I saw people outside dropping on the sidewalk." oiass-iike, easy I Clear plastic. Reduces injury due to broken glass! Multi-purpose, practical panels.
