Question: My infant daughter has eczema and I have been told there is no cure for it that she will always be troubled with I also heard from a friend that she cured it with vanishing cream. My poor baby is always trying to scratch it, so please tell me soon what causes it and is it C. R. Don't ever say that eczema can't be cured, because it can-once you find the cause of it. But you're too optimistic when you ask me to tell you what causes it because it isn't any single thing.

You don't mention having talked to a doctor about it, but that, in my opinion, is the first thing you should do. Doctors, and particularly pediatricians, quite often develop what seems to be a sixth sense. The type of rash, the location of it and other such factors sometimes give a very good clue to the cause. One is food--a baby can be, to some extent, allergic to certain foods. Allergic, for instance, even to such ordinarily healthy items as wheat products.

But some babies break out from other foods, too. Babies can also be sensitive to things that touch them. Wool is one of the offenders. Not that it bothers all babies, just some. The same is true of rubber.

If the eczema is a diaper rash, that ought to be reasonably obvious, and the answer can be much more thorough rinsing of diapers, or use of a different type of soap or detergent, or more frequent changing. This doesn't exhaust the possible causes, but it will give you some items to work on, and covers the more common types of eczema. My aunt has something called shingles. She is worried because people have told her many things about shingles. Is there a cure? Does it cause other things? Someone said it would cause blindness, also mental illness, and that people never get over shingles.

Please explain Everything she has been told is false or at least everything that you have specified. It is very unkind to tell people such scare stories and I constantly wonder why folks do it, and whether they realize the misery they are causing. If shingles break out near the eyes, special care has to be taken, but that isn't where shingles usually appear. It does not cause mental illness. People do get over it, but for some it takes longer than it does others.
