Miss Flexner, who lived at The Puritan Apartments, began her professional writing career at the old Louisville Herald, where she was a reporter and later in charge of the women's section. While at the Herald, she met her late husband, Wyncie King, a well-known cartoonist of the time who also worked for the Herald and, later, for the Saturday Evening Post. She had taken degrees from the University of Michigan and Sarah Lawrence College and taught at Sarah Lawrence and Bryn Mawr. She had also been active in the suffrage movement. In her most active period of publishing, her work attracted rather large audiences.

Her books of poetry appearing between 1920 and 1943 and Cobblestones," "This Stubborn Root and Other Poems," and "North Window and Other were published by Houghton Mifflin, Macmillan and Coward-McCann. HORTENSE FLEXNER KING Louisville author, poet, playwright dies at 88 Her poems appeared in Harper's, The Atlantic, The Masses, The New Republic, The Yorker than a hundred) and Poetry, among others. Miss Flexner also wrote children's "The Wishing Window," and "Puzzle Faun," "Mahogany," "Trembling Hands," and "The Little Miracle." According to Dr. Harvey Webster, professor emeritus of English at the University of Louisville, who has written an introduction to a volume of selected poems to be published soon by the University of Louisville, Miss Flexner's poetry was a poetry "reserved for the Deaths elsewhere Harold R. Turner, dead at 75; established U.S.

missile range Associated Press WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. Lt. Col. Harold R. Turner, 75, known as the "granddaddy of Cape Canaveral" died Thursday at El Paso, Tex.

In 1945, he drew a cross with his boot in the desert sand at the foot of the towering Organ Mountains in southern New Mexico and said, "This is where we'll put our headquarters." Turner set up a military tent for his headquarters and became the first commanding officer of White Sands Proving Ground, renamed White Sands Missile Range in 1958. Turner said he was sent to White Sands after being told by Gen. G. M. Barnes only to "go build a range for guided missiles.

"I said, 'What about the Turner recalled. "And he said, 'design Turner was later transferred from White Sands to Patrick AFB in Florida, where a proving ground was to be built at Cape Canaveral. Shively man killed in traffic accident A 34-year-old Shively man was fatally injured Thursday afternoon in a one-car accident in Grayson County near Caneyville. Harold D. Sandbach, of 1833 Kendall Lane, was killed when his car left the road and struck a utility pole.

He was an employe of the Louisville Transit Co. and a Grayson County native. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. June Miguel, of Caneyville, and his father, Robert Sandbach. The funeral will be at 1 p.m.

Sunday at Dermitt Caneyville (Ky.) Funeral Home with burial in Layman Memorial Cemetery, Caneyville. Louisville-area deaths and funerals Kenneth Lee Bounds, 22, of Inglewood Drive, died at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at SS. Mary Elizabeth Hospital after an illness. He was a Grayson County, native.

He was an apprentice electrician. Survivors include his wife, the former Frances Parrigan: a daughter, Nicole Bounds; a stepdaughter, Angela Hayes; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Bounds, of Leitchfield, and his grandmothers, Mrs. Myrtle Putman and Mrs.

Lucy Bounds, both of Leitchfield. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. CDT Saturday at Watkins Funeral Home, Leitchfield, with burial in Fairview Cemetery there. Mrs. Charles A.

Brewer, 76, of 129 Travois Road, died at 5:15 p.m. Thursday at Norton Memorial Infirmary. She was the former Jean Duff and was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mrs. S.

Stevens, of Chappaqua, N.Y.; a son, Charles F. Brewer, of Elnora, N.Y., and seven grandchildren. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Pearson's, 149 Breckinridge Lane, with cremation to follow. The body will be at the funeral home after 5 p.m.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at McAfee Buechel Funeral Home, 3928 Bardstown with burial in Highland Memory Gardens, Mount Washington. The body will be at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Saturday. Kentucky death RUSSELL SPRINGS James Harrison Wilson, 73, died Thursday at Louisville.

He was the father of Mrs. Louise Cooley, Stanley and Garland Wilson, Louisville. Funeral, 2 p.m. Sunday, Bernard Funeral Home here. fundamental nature of things as she saw it." Her last volume of poetry appeared when she was 58 and her last poem appeared in an American periodical in 1956, by Dr. Webster's reckoning. Yet in 1963 a volume of her selected poems appeared in England and less than five years ago a selection of her, poems with a critical evaluation was published in France. Other deaths: Jules Podell, 74, founder and owner of the famed Copacabana night club in midtown Manhattan; Thursday.

Actress Norma Crane, 42, who starred as Golde 1970 film "Fiddler on the Roof," den "Lose Angeles, yesterday. And Miss Flexner was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature in 1971 by the University of Louisville. Her survivors include a sister, Mrs. Alice Rothblatt, of Westport, Conn. She was the sister of the late Dr.

Morris Flexner of Louisville. The body was to be cremated. Saturday. Angelo (Joe) Petro Dalsass, 70, of Ann Rest Home, died there at 8:30 a.m. Friday. He was a retired employe of General Electric Co. and was a former employe of the old Frankfort Distilleries.

There are no immediate survivors. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 501 Cherrywood Road, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. The body is at Ratterman's, 3711 Lexington Road. Charles Frankel of 1652 Almara Circle, died Thursday morning at St.

Anthony Hospital. He had been a tailor for 65 years, operating Frankel's Cleaners and Alterations at 1607 Bardstown Road until his retirement. Frankel had previously operated a shop at Shelby and Market streets. He was a member of Keneseth Israel Congregation. Survivors include three sons, Milton Frankel, of Los Angeles, Hyman Frankel, of Austin, and Sol Frankel, seven grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Keneseth Israel Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to charity. Leslie Renee Gordon, 3-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Nathaniel Gordon, of 642 S. 27th died at 5:15 a.m. Friday at Children's Hospital. She had been under care at Children's since falling from a bicycle Aug. 10.

Other survivors include a sister, Stacy Gordon, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Gordon, of New Albany, and Mrs. Anna Davis. The funeral will be at 11 a.m.

Monday at G. C. Williams Mortuary, 1935 W. Broadway, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Herbert Miller, 61, of 613 Heywood Ave, died at 12:30 p.m.

Denis Catholic Church, 4205 Cane Run Road, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Raymond Earl, 17, of 3341 Kramers Lane, died Thursday afternoon when the side of a sand pit he was in collapsed on him. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sanford Portman three brothers, Robert Thomas R.

and Joseph S. Portman three sisters, Mrs. Steve Cundiff and the Misses Anna M. and Sherry L. Portman, and his grandparents, Mr.

CDT great Monday at the Patton Funeral Home, Former teacher to become Louisville police recruit Myra Mason, the 23-year-old former teacher who became first woman to pass the Civil Service Board tests for police officer, has been hired by the Louisville Police Department. In August Miss Mason became the first woman to pass the more strenuous physical exams, as well as the written test for the patrol post. Up to then, all women hired by the Police Department had passed the tests for the post of policewoman. According to a Police Department spokesman, Miss Mason will be in the police recruit class that starts in January or February. In the meantime, the spokesman said, she will be working at police headquarters.

Michael Bruce, 15 of La Grange Rt. 1, died Thursday at Kentucky Baptist Hospital. He had been involved in a motorcycle accident Tuesday. He was a Louisville native and a student at Oldham County High School. Survivors include his parents, Mr.

and Mrs. Daniel C. Warren of La Grange Rt. two sisters, the Misses Kay and Donna Warren, both at home; a brother, Daniel C. Warren who was involved in the accident and is now at Kentucky Baptist Hospital, and his grandparents, Mr.

Tapley Watkins, 55, died Thursday at his Ft. Lauderdale, home after an illness. Funeral, 10:30 a.m. Monday, Paul V. Shrader Funeral Home.

Masonic services, 7:30 p.m. Sunday. 3 burglars take beer, soda from school, elude police Three burglars who managed to elude two Louisville policemen Thursday at Christ The King School, 724 S. 44th also escaped with six cases of soft drinks and beer stored in the school's cafeteria for bingo events. Policemen William K.

Bryant and Michael Miller arrived at the school at 8:45 p.m. to investigate a break-in and discovered three men loading cases of beer and soft drinks into a car. According to police, as the officers arrived, two of the men fled on foot and a third escaped in the car. The policemen pursued the two men on foot and Bryant fired two shots at them with a shotgun. The two escaped, but the officers reported finding blood in a nearby alley.
