THE COURIER-JOURNAL, TUESDAY. MARCH 29, 1983 7 LOUISVILLE- AREA DEATHS Five parochial hit by wave of schools purse thefts By KEN SHAPERO Staff Writer Police and Catholic school officials have warned teachers and staff to watch their belongings after a recent wave of purse thefts. Over the past two weeks teachers and teacher's assistants at five local Catholic schools have reported purses missing from their classrooms after leaving them unattended for a while. Police believe the thefts may have been committed by the same person, said Sgt Carl Yates, a Louisville police spokesman. In two of the incidents, the victims received phone calls shortly after their purses were stolen from a person who Identified herself as an employee at their bank, Yates said.

The imposter said the bank had apprehended someone trying to cash their checks. "They would say well be back in touch with you," Yates said. One of the victims believed the imposter and didn't report the theft until about five days later, Yates said. During that time, the thief wrote about $5,000 in bad checks. Most of the checks were written to jewelry stores and toy stores, he said.

The banks did not honor any of the checks, so the victim isn't out the money, Yates said. But some of Louisvillian held Louisville police arrested a 22-year-old man yesterday who had been sought since last summer In the shooting death of a Fort Knox soldier.
