Plans to film scenes in Tuscaloosa for a movie about Paul "Bear" Bryant were canceled, the producer said yesterday Ijecause of death threats to the actep playing the role of the legendary Alabama football coach. The producer, Larry Spangler, said Gary Busey, who plays Bryant, received two telephone calls within 30u minutes Tuesday saying "if you cdhjg to Tuscaloosa the week of coach Bryant's death dressed like coach' Bryant, you will be killed." Bryant, who won more games than -'any other college football coach, died a year ago today, shortly after retiring as the Alabama coach. Spangler told The Associated Press from Atlanta that part of a crewwas in Tuscaloosa on Tuesday and that Busey and others were planning to fly to the city when Busey received the calls at his room. Spangler said he did not learn about.the calls until he was at the Atlanta airport where fog delayed their2eparture.

Spangler said Busey "began getting nervous and was a complete wreck" and that he canceled the trip. "I take that stuff seriously," Spangler said. "I don't write any of that off. I told Gary, 'Look, you don't have to go person's got to be sick to make a call-like that, even if it is a prank if he's not going to do anything," said Spangler. Spiingler said the plans were to hajjr-Uusey, playing Bryant at age "a certain area of the cam-pus that we felt he was very responsible for in the growth of the university, fcnd have him reflect on his life through a montage." He said if he later decides the scene is necessary, the footage still will be shot at Tuscaloosa.

Spangler and the Bryant family have disagreed over aspects of the film, including the choice of the ac tor to play Bryant, and most of the footage has been shot in Texas and Georgia instead of Alabama. Michael Parver, publicist for the movie, said one problem was that Bryant's family "did not like the choice of Gary Busey. I think he is phenomenal as the Bear. He sounds like Bear Bryant." Spangler said the movie is 85 per cent finished and will open Oct.
