THURSDAY MORNING, AUGUST 6, 1970 3 The Summer Sailor The Martins are 'always prepared' with food Will Plants Replace the Pill? LIMA, Peru (AP) Peruvian jungle tribes used oral contraceptives, an American expert said at the North Americanists Congress. Nicole Maxwell, research associate of the Museum of the American Indian, the Heye Foundation in New York, said: "Many tribes of the Amazon Basin have for centuries practiced family planning by using oral contraceptives of botanical origin. "Some of the medicinal plants employed are reputed to protect women from pregnancy for extended periods of time," she said.

"The reason that these practices have not become known is that the tribes surround such matter by strict taboos forbidding their disclosure to. outsiders." Miss Maxwell submitted a paper' at. the congress and she relatpd observations made of various tribes for the past 17 years. Miss Maxwell said she has collected, and is in process of getting identification of 15 medicinal plants used as contraceptives by these and other tribes, These plants are reputed to induce sterility in women for periods varying from a year to life. The Martins completed the course, purchased a cruiser, and now he is the commander of Flotilla 41 and she is a staff officer of Flotilla 46. The Martins' dedication to the water is a natural outgrowth of his years in the regular and reserve branches of the Navy, and their love of the outdoors. The Martins both participate actively in the different areas of auxiliary programs.

They've taught public education classes, participated in courtesy motor-boat examinations, and remain constantly on the alert in the operations phase of the auxiliary. The Martins have a battery of electronic equipment on board the Madeline Lee, and are available to help in safety patrols or search and rescue missions with the Coast Guard several nights a week. Martin hopes that many more boaters will take advantage of the courtesy motor boat examinations which are being held at Carrie Gaulbert Cox Park every Thursday night until Labor Day. In order for a craft to pass the examination, it must carry all federally required equipment for a boat its size plus additional Coast Guard auxiliary requirements: Flares or fuses, proper navigational lights, anchor with line, proper ventilation and backfire arresters. 1 Another program In which the Martins will participate aboard their 28-foot cruiser this weekend is the patrolling of Kentucky and Indiana shores this week- "Win That's her name! Madeline Martin finds herself juggling precious minutes between her full-time job at Central Hospital, rearing three teen-agers and trying to keep up with the commander. Although she is delightfully organized, Mrs. Martin remains flexible enough to enjoy a late evening dinner on board or extra guests for lunch. Their cruiser is fully equipped with a roomy galley, but Mrs. Martin has had to learn to improvise when the Madeline Lee is fogged in, or the Martins decide unexpectedly to stay on board over night.

Here are some favorite recipes of the Martins. Each serves 4. cookie sheets at 350 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes, or until cookie is light brown. Cool on waxed paper, and place in tin boxes for carrying to boat. Makes about 5 dozen.
