Saturday slapped door handles and shouted lewd and abusive language at workers-as they left. In addition, Frazier said that cars driven by striking employees have been following cars as they leave the parking lot and Belknap trucks as they leave warehouse area. The hearing before Eckert fs not the only legal battle in the strike, On Feb. 23, Belknap filed a charge of unfair labor practices against the union with the National Labor Relations Board's regional office in Cincinnati. This involves the same charges of threats, assaults and mass picketing.

On March 7, the union countered with an unfair labor practices charge against Belknap. Local 89 charged tiat the company "engaged in surface and bad-faith bargaining" by making unreasonable demands and by attemptiag to bypass and undermine the Belknap also has filed ft suit against the union asking $3 million in damages and increased costs it said it has suffered because of the strike. The company said it has hired permanent replacements for all the striking employees. Union officials said the company: is trying to get rid of the union. Kenny Howell, business agent for Local 89, said Belknap attorney Joseph Worthing-ton "said during our negotiations that as soon as the company got enough they were going to try to decertify (the Worthington denied making that statement directly to union leaders.

But he said, "We have discussed the possibility of petitioning the National Labor Relations Board to hold another (union representation) election. So far, the company's made no decision in that area." Union officials said the main issues in the contract dispute are the company's policies on overtime, holiday pay, vacations, seniority and job classification. But Worthington, Belknap's chief negotiator, said the main issue is pay. The union originally asked for $4.45 in raises over three years but has since come down some, he said. The company offered $1.10.

Gunshot victim charged hy police A 23-year-old man who was shot Tuesday morning was arrested yesterday morning by Jefferson County police and charged in connection with an alleged conspiracy to murder two Minnesota hitchhikers. Gary L. Graham, of the 6900 block of Blackhorse Way, was charged with attempted murder. Police said Graham was shot in the stomach with a shotgun by one of two men allegedly involved in tie conspiracy with him. Police said the two men who were previously charged with attempted murder are Carl H.

28, of the 2800 block of Elam Drive and Michael F. Newton, 26, of the 500 block of Medallion Court. Irwin was also charged with assaulting Graham. Police said two men had picked up the hitchhikers on Interstate 65 near the Watterson Expressway and had taken them to a field to spend the night. Police said the two men later met Graham at his home and were on their way to see the couple when an argument started and Graham was shot.

The shooting occurred in a' field off Taylorsville Road near Six Mile Lane. It was reported by one of the hitchhikers a University of Minnesota coed who heard the shot. Police found Graham on the ground. The attempted murder charges were in connection with an alleged plan to kill the two hitchhikers. Eckert yesterday heard more than eight hours of testimony of alleged violence, harassment and threats by striking employees of Belknap Louisville's major warehouse distributing company. The testimony opened a hearing on whether Teamsters Local 89 and the strikers have violated a court order against such activities and thus should be held in contempt of court. Belknap is also seeking to have the restraining order expanded. The hearing in the Hall of Justice will resume at 9 a.m. today.

The strike, the first in the company's 138-year history, is in its eighth week. About 385 employees are involved in the contract dispute. The strikers are picketing at eight locations at the company headquarters, 111 E. Main and in the warehouse area along Washington Street. Company and union officials said little progress is being made in negotiations.

Negotiators met with a federal mediator Wednesday and another session is scheduled for next Wednesday. Counsel for the company put 11 witnesses on the stand yesterday to support the company's contention that the strikers have violated the court order. The union will present its side of the dispute today. Yesterday, Ralph Bridgers, who was hired as a replacement for a striking employee, testified that he was confronted by a striker and struck over the head Feb. 27 after he got off work and was going to catch a bus home.

He said he was taken to General Hospital, where 40 stitches were needed to close the wound. He said the doctor has not allowed him to return to work. Bridgers and his brother, Whitney Bridgers, who was with him, identified striker Terry Decker as the person who struck Ralph Bridgers. Connie Lee Hurt, who said she was hired as a secretary at Belknap's on Feb. 10, testified that she had received telephone calls at home threatening her life.

She also testified about other incidents. When asked if people involved were in the courtroom, she hesitated to point out anyone. "Are you hesitant to testify out of fear?" Eckert asked. "Yes, sir," she replied. "Are you afraid you might be hurt?" the judge asked.

"Yes later," she replied. Eckert said he wanted to be told of any further threats or harassment. "The court will deal with that directly itself," he said. Michael W. Lynch, another replacement employee, said that on Feb.

13, when he went to Belknap's to apply for a job, he parked his car at Brook and Main streets. Later, he said, he saw "a man with a sharp object jabbing at his tires." He said he chased the man, caught him and held him until police arrived. The man was identified as Fred Sowders, a striker, Lynch said. Lt. Ronald Frazier, supervisor of special security police at Belknap's, testified that strikers had been throwing nails on the street leading from a company parking lot "from the very first day of the strike." Frazier said the security police removed 750 to 1,000 roofing nails from the street one day after Frazier had seen Harry Reeves, a striker, and another man whom Frazier did not know walk down the street "in a zig-zag fashion." Frazier also testified that on Feb.

16, from 30 to 40 pickets gathered at Brook and Main when Belknap workers got off work and kicked the sides of vehicles.
