But, from the way he talked. Texans wouldn't. They want Tern. The joker comes here maybe Coach Bobhy Dodd of Tech doesn't want the Cotton Bowl. Sugar Bowl Boy, do these folks have troubles! Thcv pot themselves into a jam, it now seems reasonably tpparent, by dealing with West Virginia several weeks ago.

West Virginia looked like a fair team A the time a victory over Pittsburgh, which gave Notre Dame fits, and a one point win over a so-so Tenn State. Then, Virginia Polytechnic In-rtitute, coached by ex-U. K. assistant Frank Moseley, almost whipped West Virginia in what would have been a tremendous upset before losing by one touchdown in the fourth quarter. Next week, South Carolina stunned West Virginia 2014 Put, last Saturday, the Virginians clobbered a weak North Carolina State 61-0.

So, they're still ih Sugar Bowl plans. Actually, miffed by the Orange Bowl getting the Atlantic Coast Conference champ (Maryland) and the Biff Seven titlist (Oklahoma) to play, the Sugar Bowl ent to Southern Conference people. Lift the Southern ban on bowl participation, they said, in effect, and West Virginia is in. Then West Virginia skidded Folks in New Orleans (and elsewhere) predicted a repeat of that ridiculous Syracuse-Alabama Orange Bowl game of last season ('Bama killed 'em) if West Virginia were matched against Kentucky, Georgia Tech, the win I I ml W'aahmiton. 2 4 1 Oreaon 2 5 1 Idaho 0 10 Months to Pay Down 30 over Tom Dewey.

Prices were beginning an inflationary spiral. The Fabulous Five helped America win an Olympic basketball championship. And Manual scored on Male. Yessir, it was about 4.05 in the afternoon of that sunny November day five years ago when Harry later 1A at Kentucky Jones stood in the Male end zone. Nary a Crimson has trod th-re since.

Only an incredible series of Manual bad luck and Male good fortune can account for that long drought. Male coach Nick Denes justly owns a well earned reputation as a defensive specialist but he will admit that four straight shutouts is rare good fortune. Jones since has completed a tour at Kentucky and another band of Crimsons are ready to try to break the defensive shackles imposed on their forebears by Denes. Schedule! Were Almost Even Using the Dickinson System as a guage, Mule and Manual played schedules of almost equal strength. The Crimsons met six A teams (ones that won more than half of their games) and four clubs (winners of half or less).

Male's agenda included six A teams and three teams. Manual won from one A team (Eastern) and three clubs (Valley, Mt. Sterling and Southern). The Reds lost to four A teams (St. Lafayette, Pensacola and Franklin-Simpson) and one club (Atherton).

They tied Flaget, an A team. Male defeated two A clubs (Eastern and St. and three (Shawnee, Southern and Athor-ton). The Purples lost to three A teams (Flaget, Paducah and Purcell) and were tied by an A club (University City). Reds Lightest In History Manual will send the lightest team in its history into the Parkway Field arena Thursday at 2 m.

Six Bulldogs were regulars last year: they include Ken Kuhn, Ken Kerr and Don Craig on offense and Bill Underhill, Bob Donnelly and Ken Vickers on defense. Manual regulars last season were Bruce Zirnheld, Bob Woolfolk, Harry White and Tom Zickel on offense and Bobby Ferriell on defense.

In addition to the regulars, these Purples performed as reserves in Male's 30-0 landslide last year; Ronnie Hartlage, Fred Heina, Lynn May-field, Larry Fife, Jake Wishnia, Gene Harrington, Bob Dolack, Kenny Martin and Roger Knapper. Manual reserves who performed in that Turkey classic were Tom Irwin, Don Brogan, Bob Leon-hardt, Howard Bates and Bobby Charmoli. Male commands a wide edge in experience with eight letterman in its 18-man offense-defense combination. Offensive lettermen are tackles Donnelly and Underbill, quarterback Kuhn, halfbacks Kerr (a third year man) and Fife and fullback Craig. Defensive lettermen include Donnelly, Underhill, Fife, Kerr, guard Ken Vickers and tackle Ronnie Heatherly.

Manual's offense-defense units of 16 players numbers only four lettermen. They are end Zirnheld, tackle Woolfolk, halfback White and quar ik' it if i i over U. K. That makes V. K.

look bad to the Cotton Bowl? Gator Bowl No dice, it seems, as far as I'. K. is concerned. But there is an outside chance that the Cats may consider it. The Gator rewards a team with ovt 50.000 and, per rules, all a team can get from any bowl is $85,000 The remainder ol the $150,000 offered by the Cotton Bowl and the $125,000 by the Sugar Bowl goes to the league and is split among loop teams.

Hardy On Knee? Hate to bring this up, but there is a little speculation about whether quarterback Bob Hardy of Paducah kneed the turf when he shipped the ball to Ralph Paolone on the 23 ard run that won the game for U. K. over Tennessee. Tennessee writers, though, aren't making an Issue of it Just mentioned the matter in a reportorial way, checking a'l angles to the game. Coach Harvey Robinson of Tennessee wouldn't comment, saying he wasn't in position to see the play.

Harold Harris of The Knox-ville News Sentinel told us by phone, 'There's no sour grapes here in Knoxville Kentucky deserved to win. Maybe Hardy was on a knee. So what? Maybe Kentucky would have scored any-v ay, too." 1 tmm I I I Ma I 8th I Broadway-4th I Broadway 6th Broadway Ith I Broodway JA 7137 WA 0791 Read the CLASSIFIED ADS! Purdue Prospects Bright Indiana had the consolation that its three leading ground gainers also were under classmen and sophomore John Bartkiewic. topped both teams with 100 yards in 11 carries and caught four passes for 57 yards. Helinski is only a junior and he passed for 111 yards with no interceptions. Tommy Cassldy, sophomore Indiana quarterback from Chicago, had one of those nightmare days. He threw four passes and Purdue Intercepted three of them.

Campus In Mourning Indiana fans, teams and students had been on an emotional jag all last week. Pre-game enthusiasm had reached a peak uncommon at I. with everybody convinced the Hoosiers would, win this one. The professional handicappers thought so, too. The moral seems to be that it's bad practice to kick a dead mastiff.

Fumble Sets Pattern The early confidence of the Hoosiers was indicated when they had fourth down and about a foot to go, on their 30, the fourth play after the first kickoff.

They gambled and Jerry Ellis made a yard. Two plays later, guard Tom Bettis of Purdue recovered quarterback Florian Helinski's fumble and set the pattern for the lest of the game. A sad thing, from Indiana's viewpoint, was that Coach Stu Holcomb of Purdue could have left all his seniors on the bench without changing the result.
