Not since 1931 has the rail group, as measured by the Associated Press average of 15 carrier issues, touched today's peak. Traders in the rail division advanced 50 cents to an extreme of $3.75 a share. Final prices were tops for the day in most cases Rails dominated the market from start to finish but there was enough demand left over to give a substantial lift to other groups, particularly steels, autos and oils. The market at a whole, according to the AP 60-stock average, equalled its 1950 high which in turn was the best level since June. 1946.
