SECTION 2 SPORTS THE COURIER-JOURNAL, LOUISVILLE, SUNDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 3, 1950. FOOTBALL Trojans Beat Irish on Kickoff Return 1 guided the Irish to the first score. It took 14 crunching plays to drive. 54 yards to the one, where Williams pushed across. The point was kicked.

But the key play was a costly one. John Petit-bon took a pass from Williams for 18 yards and was brought down on the one. He suffered a concussion and saw no further action. Williams also suffered a slight concussion and Bill Barrett and Murray Johnson were taken out, injured, before the game was over. The Irish kicked off, and then came the dramatic run.

Sears, 180-pound right halfback, took the ball on the six-yard line. He slanted to his left and whizzed down the sidelines. He went all the way, virtually unmolested after the 35-yard line. The extra point was good and it was all' tied up. It was the longest run in the series since Bud Langley of the Trojans ran 99 yards with an intercepted pass in 1936 and was reminiscent of the 95-yard kick-off return made by Trojan Russ Saunders against the Irish at Soldier Field, Chicago, in 1929.

The payoff punch, the winning two points, came in the third period. Notre Dame, pushed around badly, was back down to its own 22 and Williams faded back to punt out on fourth down. But 1 McMurtry, 31-year-old daddy of the Trojans, broke through and blocked the try. The ball bounded back into the end zone. Trojan Volney Peters dived for it, hit it but couldn't hold it.

The ball bounced out of the end zone. The team physician said William's condition vas good and all X-rays taken proved negative. Williams, carried from the field in the fourth period, will be released from the hospital tomorrow. Nine Irish players were injured in the bruising game. Halfback Larry Johnson was X-rayed for an ankle injury.

i i Stetson 7 is 1 part of the Los Angeles, Dec. 2 (AP) Southern California's five-times beaten Trojans played football today for the first time this season and belted favored Notre Dame farther down the ladder by a 9-7 "score. A tremendous 94-yard kickoff return by speedy halfback Jim Sears raised the roaring crowd of 70,177 to its feet and brought U.S.C. its tying touchdown ih the second quarter. A blocked Notre Dame punt that produced a 2-point safety irithe third sent the Trojans crashing into their first triumph over the Irish since 1939.

Key Man Knocked Out Notre Dame, many of its key men knocked out of play in the second half, battled down close enough in the' final three minutes to throw a scare into the Trojan forces. But a try for a field goal from 26 yards out was wide. The defeat, a sad blow to Notre Dame's Coach Frank Leahy, who missed the game and had to stay home in Indiana because of influenza, ended the worst Irish season since 1933. This was only the fourth time in history that the South Bend team has suffered as many as four defeats in one season. Quarterback Bob Williams, man Looking for a Warm GIFT? "That boy Claude Arnold (Oklahoma's passing quarterback) keeps the pressure on all the time, so you can't defend against his ground attack," Bryant said. "He's calling smart signals out there." "I've been voting Oklahoma first in the nation in the United Press ratings since early in the season. Now I know I've been right." Bryant said Oklahoma's line speed was the biggest surprise. "'Those tackles and guards moved like backfield men," he said. Bryant said he suspected Oklahoma's coach Charles "Bud" Wilkinson was keeping some of his assets in a strongbox during today's game with relatively weak A.
