ENGAGEMENTS Lexington Crowd Toasts New Lieutenant 4 3 Justice Horne Louiiville girl to iced lieutenant from Indiana Mr. and Mrs. Montrose Dalton Justice announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Jean Bruce Justice, to Lieut. Blanch-ard Jackson Horne, son of Mrs. B.

J. Horne and the late Mr. Horne, Anderson, Ind. Miss Justice is a graduate of the J. M.

Atherton High School. A graduate of the Kentucky Military Institute, Lieutenant Horne attended Purdue University and is a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Merlen Summers Mr. and Mrs. William J.

Mer-ten, 2382 Valley Vista Road, announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Marilyn Anita Merten, to Mr. Wilson Summers, III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Summers, Jr. 4- lly Dot Tcllitall column, taken at the mid-winter dance set in Chapel Hill.

As the boys, most of whom entered Carolina in January, had a good idea that it would be their first and last week-end of college dances, they invited Kitty Kelly, Emily Wymond, Peggy Mullin and Sally Ann Cordon, who was at a fraternity banquet when the picture was taken, to join them in the fun. Chaperoned by Mrs. Dan Sullivan, the high school belles had their first fling at a collegiate week-end and, take it from us, they didn't miss a trick. Besides meeting the fraternity brothers at the Beta Theta Pi and Kappa Sigma houses, the L'ville foursome attended two dances, a track meet, the Betas' breakfast dance, a picnic on Hoagland's Lake with frequent stops for short coke orders at The Porthole and The Pines. Dan Sullivan already is on active duty in the Army Air Forces, where Jimmy Johnston, who came home yesterday, will soon be marching and cramming aviation facts and figures.

Buz Bush, who arrived home yesterday, and the Cordon brothers are expecting calls to the colors in the near future. Visiting his grandmother, Mrs. J. Oscar Moore, McConnellsville, S. Bill Moore will roll into town the first of the week and look into his military status.

PFC. BOB BALL had to' catch a west-bound train last Friday and return to Camp Elliott, San Diego, Calif. A veteran of the Marines' Guadalcanal campaign, Bob told his family that a good Marine "doesn't tell everything he knows" so that's all the news on Bob at this point. OUR YOUNG READERS will remember a vivacious girl from Texas, Maizie Sale, who had visited the Verser Conners in bygone summers, when she won the attentions of many L'ville lads. We'd like to announce that Maizie, the daughter of Dr.

Walter Wynne Sale and Mrs. Sale, Victoria, Texas, will marry Lieut. Col. David Lee Hill, Army Air Forces, on March 27. One of the famous Flying Tigers who fought in China, David is referred to as the No.

2 ace in Russell Wheland's book. "The Flying Tigers." As Harriet Conner is to be one of Maizie's bridesmaids, the Conners are going to Victoria for the wedding and they hop to see Verser, who's now stationed at the Army Air Forces' cadet center, San Antonio, Texas. JANE EAKEN, who has the measles and the three-week variety, spends her quarantined days listening to the radio's soap operas, as measled people are not allowed to read. Jane says that Helen Trent, Our Gal Sunday and Big Sister are corny entertainment, yet she listens just the same. We have a suggestion for our readers who happen to be faithful followers of such radio serials as Second Husband and Life Can Be Beautiful.

If you miss an installment or two and want to know just what happened, just call your chum, who has the measles, chickenpox or mumps. A COMING ATTRACTION for the high school crowds is the Transcript staff's Victory Dance at Collegiate School Friday night, March 26. Ann Arrasmith, business manager of Collegiate's annual, is putting all her pep, vim and vitality into the advance plans for the dance that we hear will be a two-way break dance, both boys and girls can break. It's a good idea as it will insure a rushier time for the girls and boys as well. BRENAU'S BIG SHOTS include several Kentucky students and we're proud of them.

First and foremost, we salute Margaret Baughman, Moreland. Ky, a dean's list student, who was elected to the highest office on tile campus for next year, president of student government. Other dean's listers from Kentucky are Gene Cash, Princeton, and L'ville's modest representative, Mary Moorman Ryan, art editor of Brenau's annual. OUR GOOD LEXINGTON FRIENDS know how to stir up a celebration whenever one of their boys returns home in all of his "shavetail" glory, after winning his gold bars the hard in an officer candidate school. When Lieut.

Louis Lee Haggin came home the other day from Fort Sill, where he'd "done his stretch in hell" at the Field Artillery O.C.S., his sister, Emmy Haggin Parrish, and her husband, Doug Parrish, collected a gang of young and gay L'tonians at Mount Brilliant, Mrs. Louis Haggin's home, to pass the loving cup around and toast the lieutenant. Lloyd and Nathan Elliott left their home in Cincinnati to be among the friendly crowd that greeted Louie. We have heard that Lieutenant Haggin will be an instructor in the Field Artillery School and his wife, Alma Headley Haggin, and their three children will join him later at Fort Sill. WHILE WE'RE ON THE SUBJECT of O.C.S., we'd like to throw in a few quick bits concerning several of the candidates, past and present, of the Armored Force O.C.S.

Now on overseas duty, Bill Cory, one of the Baltimoreans who was about town last summer, has advanced to the rank of a first lieutenant. After drawing an assignment to an armored division at Camp Forest, Lieut. Hank Robertson hit the road for Baltimore and Charlottesville, where he'll see his chums during his first leave, as officer in the. Army. A recent graduate of th tanker's O.C.S., Lieut.

Jack Egan has been assigned a tank battalion that's stationed at Knox. Meredith Wanless Van Meter comes down from Lexington on week-ends to calch a glimpse of Ike Van Meter, who is two-thirds of the way through cleaning rifles filled with cosmo-lene, scrubbing rifle belts and standing guard mounts. AMONG THEIR SOUVENIRS carefree days L'ville freshmen at the University of North Carolina will cherish the picture, which we show you in today's A graduate of Sacred Heart Academy, Miss Merten is attend' ing Ursuline College, Mr. Sunr mers, who attended the Univer sity of Louisville, was called to active duty in the Army Air Forces on February 26 and is stationed at Miami Beach, Fla.
