Soviets urged to have larger families MOSCOW (AP) A psychologist urged Soviet parents last week to have more than one child because an only child often becomes spoiled, lazy, egotistical, delinquent and a "family despot." Moreover, a single child often does not gain the "collective" spirit necessary for "a citizen constructing communism," psychologist M. Alemaskin wrote in the Literary Gazette.

Alemaskin's article was part of a series in the Writers' Union weekly partly aimed at curbing the sharp decline in the Soviet birth rate. The birth rate is about 50 per cent lower than it was under the czars. The Soviet Union is more than twice as large as the United States, but according to the 1970 United Nations census figures, had a population of about 243 million compared to about 205 million in the United States. Quoting Anton S. Makarenko, a Soviet educator prominent in the 1930s, Alemaskin said educating an only child is much more difficult than educating one who has brothers and sisters.

Alemaskin added that an only child "becomes lazy and spineless is often rude, undisciplined and despotic has no respect for adults and manifests "slow development of initiative and independence."
