GAii'S More on your Valuable 100 S. PRESTON (AT COLLEGE ST.) FOREST HILLS, N.Y. (AP) Hie Nastase, a 23-year-old onetime Romanian shepherd boy, upset America's national champion, Stan Smith, as disaster struck Uncle Sam's Davis Cup team in the U.S. Open Tennis Championships yesterday. In the first confrontation of the two teams who will battle for the cup next month in Cleveland, the slender, dark-haired Nastase from behind the Iron Curtain cut down the towering Smith 5-7, 12-10, 7-5, 6-3 in a second-round match.

The crowd of 10,000 at West Side Stadium was astounded at Nastase's remarkable performance on a grass surface unfamiliar to him. Smith's defeat was just part of the ill fortune that befell the American squad. Although a doctor said it was a minor sprain, there was doubt that Graebner could be made fit for the cup clash with the dark-horse Romanians Sept.

Another player who might be expected to be thrown into the breach, Charlie Pasarell of Puerto Rico, was knocked out of the U.S. Open in straight sets by a big, bearded Australian named Terry Addison 6-3, 9-7, 6-4. "This is a triple disaster for us but only at Forest Hills," said U.S. Davis Cup captain Donald DelL "Maybe it will be a good thing in that our team won't go into Cleveland overconfident.

This match shows these guys can be really tough." Smith, a strapping 6-foot4 Californian, figured to be America's top singles hope in the challenge round although ranked third nationally behind both Ashe and Graebner. Graebner insisted on continuing play after his ankle was hurt in the match with Taylor, a pro. However, with Taylor leading 4-6, 6-1, 2-0, he finally defaulted. Billie Jean King Advances Margaret Court of Australia and Billie Jean King of Long Beach, the women's favorites, were easy second-round winners. Mrs.
