Tiede, on special assignment for The Cleveland Press, brought along two suitcases full of holiday greetings from the newspaper's readers. "I'm going to be Cleveland's Saigon Santa Claus this year," Tiede said.

"My job is to personally deliver as many of the messages as possible." All of the Yule mail Tiede brought (over 50 pounds of it) was written by relatives of Cleveland servicemen in the war zone. Tiede's assignment, which he estimates will result in 5,000 miles of in-country air travel before Dec. 25th, promises to be a lively one. YOU" CLOTHING LYNNVIIW SHOPPING CINTII. THE COURIER-JOURNAL. LOUISVILLE, KY. I) BLOOM INGTON. Ind. (AP Ikot Alfred Ekanem yesterday became a council YUM IN SYMBOLIC RING is presented Ikot Alfred Ekanem (seated) by Joseph Dhikusoka of Uganda during investiture at IU.

Out It Goes Regardless of Costl! Odd Rolls-Singleton Rolls-Large Roll Ends REMNANTS-SHORT ROLLS-Discontinued Patterns at Greatly Reduced Installations and Delivery Guaranteed For chief of his Ikot Ebelspo-Oniong tribe in his native Nigeria. He had the help of 16 fellow African students of Indiana University in the investiture ceremonies witnessed by 350 persons crowded into a 230-seat auditorium. Because he said he believes there is much to be preserved in his tribe's traditions, Ekanem said he wanted the investiture held here so that Americans could learn something about the tribal customs. Ekanem's tribe of about 50,000 dwells near Eket. a city in southeastern Nigeria.

"I will not be a ruler, but will work with my people as a leader," he said after he was bedecked with crown, robe and ring. Medical Career His Goal Ekanem, in his early 20s, plans to become a doctor and return to Africa, meanwhile corresponding with the tribal council, on which his deceased mother and father had sat. He planned to send movie films of the investiture to the council. The investiture, which in Nigeria usually lasts two weeks, was shortened to an hour and a half. Ceremonies began with robed student attendants entering with candles, waving pine boughs and dancing to what was described as "high-life music." The candles replaced traditional use of palm-oil lights and the pine boughs substituted for palms.

Then Ekanem entered on foot. It was explained humorously that normally he would have appeared on horseback or in a chariot, neither of which was suitable for the auditorium. Ring Brought From 'Spirits' Two women attendants were directed to exit and look for a ring supposedly in possession of spirits. After a dancing interlude, one returned with a ring. A student in the role of councilman then proclaimed, "Let it be known that fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom," and slipped the ring on Ekanem's finger.

Similar rituals marked the robing and crowning and at the conclusion of the rites the onlookers gave a standing ovation. Students playing the councilmen chanted, "Long live the Chief!" Ekanem, who came to the United States in 1961 and was graduated from high school in Indianapolis, said he believes all men are striving for the same thing of mind." His trip was sponsored by Miss Gertrude Bluemel of Indianapolis, a nurse he met at the Eket Lutheran Hospital. Crash Hurts Couple 3,45 If From Date Returning Two teen-agers returning home from a date were injured about 12:15 a m. yesterday when the car they were in hit a utility pole on Grinstead Drive near Kennedy, police reported. John L.

Police said Polk was driving when he lost control of his car and it ran off the street and hit the pole. Blaze Him INoh Hill Hol.
