Rockefeller returned to the California primary campaign yesterday with the charge that the nomination of Senator Barry Goldwater Ariz.) for president might result in the Republican Party losing the 1984 election. Goldwater's "irresponsibility and extremism," the New York Governor told a luncheon audience at Sacramento, "would not appeal to the American electorate this November." At stake in his contest with Goldwater, he emphasized, is "the future of the Republican Party its contact with reality, its ability to win the 1964 national election," and the question whether it' could "remain a major forca in American political life." Rockefeller was encouraged by a successful day of campaigning in Oregon and optimistic reports of gains in that state. His assault on Goldwaler, stopping just short of the charge that the senator cannot win in November, rests on two assumptions: The California primary is the major battleground of the preconvention campaign and a victory for Goldwater here would insure his nomination in July. But the senator can be beaten here if the moderate elements of the California Party unite behind Rockefeller, the only other candidate on the primary ballot.
