August be. edad fifty-two year-Od, for the fiftieth runnine of the Kentucky of the Louisville Girls High School won the right to represent the Louisville District by emerging victorious over all opposition in the seventeenth district sectional basketball tournament held at the du Pont gym. In the finals, played last night. Coach Neal Arntson's warriors smashed the hopes of the valiant Purples of Male High by defeating them, 20 to 8, while a few minutes before that Coach Naomi Zinsmeister's plucky, brilliant little band of feminine court performers had concluded a most satisfying victory over the Bardstown girls, 26 to 10. By the terms of the race the fees are $25 to nominate and $500 additional to start, which with twenty starters and $50,000 in added money would make the gross value of the stake $63,800. of which $6,000 will go to the place and $3,000 to the show horses, with $1,000 to the fourth horse. The net value to the winner, deducting the nominating and starting fees, would be $53,275 and the gold trophy. Already widespread interest has been indicated in the fiftieth running of the Churchilt Downs turf classic. A number of hotel reservations have already been made for visitors, whose number is expected to exceed that of any prvious year.

Top r.rlony tested last night climaxed the tourney, one event leading up to the termination is deserving of equal note. In a game that was witnessed by a crowd packed into the spacious Manutil gym. a crowd that seemed to taketpart in the game fully as much as did the principals, the players, Male High snatched the brand of victory from the burning when Captain Willard Thompson beat the final gun by one second with a field goal that tied the lead taken by St, Xavier and made necessary a five-minute overtime period. And in that period, crippled Wallace Brooks, Purple forward, tossed two free throws that gavo the Purples a 19-17 victory and the right to play in the finals against Manual. It was a tough blow for St.

Xavier. for it took from them the chance to meet Manual, the same team that last yeur at Shepherdsville won a game from the Saints in a similar manner. The Crimson triumph, though decisive, was achieved only after a ies-perate battle. Burdened by natural fatigue resulting from their bitter struggle with St. Xavier in the morn ing, the Elam-Horne combination strove witn utter disregard of physi cal well being to stem the tide of Crimson superiority.

Tiey did this by diving headlong afftn- the ball, by taking long, impossible looking shots and tearing into the inexorable Manual machine with a spirit that gained applause. But they were unequal to the task Manual did not loaf last night. The Crimson played scientific basketball, a brand of basketball that bore the im print of Neal Arntson, court strate-( gist. They passed swiftly, surely, guarded more closely than the pro verbial shadow hangs to its author and though they missed many easy shots, they yet hit the basket when they should have. It was Paul Jenkins night at Du-Pont gym.

He was all over the floor, dribbling elusively, hanging onto Captain Thompson, the Purple long shot artist and captain, preventing him from getting loose for the de vastating shooting that has wrecked so many teams this year. The Crimson took the iead, were headed once, regained it and never lost it. The end of the first quarter they led 3 to 2, at the end of the second 7 to 3. The third quarter found them in the lead 12 to 3, and they stepped out more in the last to win 20 to 8. It was the sixteenth time Coach Arntson has pitted a team coached by against a Male High rep rcsentative, Manual supporters said last night.

Thirteen times he has won, twice he has lost, and one tied. Naturally enough, during a game of the caliber as last night's, some. Payne Whitney Pennant Ballet. Greentree Stable Dominant Fresnay. Friar Marcus Paloma.
