Tommy Brothers, the young apprentice rider.who made an Impression with owners and trainers during the closing days of the fall meeting at Latonia, got away to a (lying start on the second day of the winter meeting here. Brothers made his debut in the saddle-last season at Oriental Park, but received little or no attention from the raclngNpublic at that time. But Tommy is trq observing lad, has been learning how to ride in the meantime with a weather eye on pace to the end that he ought to hold his own with most of the jockeys engaged in Cuba this winter. He is under contract to Dan Lehan. a small breeder and owner at Jeffer-sontown, near Louisville. Mr.. Lehan wishing to have his charge gain ex perience .that ho otherwise would nbt get up north, sent Brothers here in charge of W. A. McKinney, who has several very useful horses being campaigned during the Cuba meeting. Native of Newport. Brothers Is a native of Newport. Ky.. and is able to scale comfortably at ninety-five pounds. He. takes a keen Interest in his work being almost broken hearted when his field got away without him lh- the handicap event on the opening day. Buddie Keen had been fractious at the post and when the barrier was sprung he was facing the grand stand, despite Brothers' strenuous efforts to keep him straight.
